There are an estimated 100,000 war memorials in the UK. Erected by communities, for communities each one commemorates their loss. Sadly, names continue to be added as members of our Armed Forces who sacrificed their lives in service to recent conflicts join the fallen of earlier conflicts.
While many war memorials are well cared for, up to 7,000 are in need of attention, suffering the effects of weathering, ageing and vandalism. War Memorials Trust helps communities ensure that each and every one is in a condition fit to remember those who have died for their country by providing advice to anyone with a war memorial enquiry and offering grants for their repair and conservation.
The coming years will see the centenary of 66,000 war memorials commemorating World War I as well as significant anniversaries relating to the Boer War, World War II, the Korean War, the Falklands War and the first Gulf War. This is likely to ensure an ongoing interest in war memorials and a continued demand for help from the charity.
As the twentieth century wars, which directly impacted so many people, fade from living memory it is vital we maintain these war memorials to help subsequent generations comprehend the human consequences of conflict.
Your legacy could be your personal memorial to help preserve our nation’s war memorials for future generations. For further information please contact the charity’s Director on 0300 123 0764 or firstname.lastname@example.org
