Pukar is a registered charity based in Preston, Lancashire and situated in the Avenham ward, recognised as a deprived area of the city. Pukar was founded in 1998 to meet the needs of disabled adults and carers from diverse communities with language needs, low skills and confidence. The important complimentary role to the public sector has continued to the present day.

Pukar’s current work involves a) drop in service for disabled people, carers other vulnerable adults. The design of a wellbeing toolkit following needs assessment, b) workshops for adult carers and the unemployed, c) English classes for recent migrants, and d) an outreach service for those unable to access the centre.

With 3 paid staff and a team of 12 volunteers, Pukar provides itself on its ability to respond quickly in delivering these services at point of need. Many clients gain soft skills, accredited qualification leading to jobs.

Pukar works in partnership with statutory agencies from local and central government, plus local voluntary and faith groups. Its organisation is run by a board of trustees with management in the hands of a centre manager.

Pukar relies on grant funding and recent cutbacks from Preston Council has resulted in a current shortfall of £14,000.00 between income and expenditure. In response Pukar has cut staff hours and organised fundraising events.

Pukar requests legacy bequests in order to maintain its current workload and meet the increase in demand for its services.
