The Donkey Sanctuary works around the world to improve the lives of donkeys, wherever there is greatest need. We are collaborative in all our activities, working through a network of partner organisations, individuals and communities. We treat every interaction as an opportunity to both learn and teach, helping donkey owners and carers become donkey welfare ambassadors, wherever they live and work. In 2016 we helped donkeys in 38 countries, reaching 1.6 million animals.

Our international outreach embraces veterinary care, nutrition, housing, working hours, weight of load, and welfare-friendly harness and cart design.

We are the champion for donkeys around the world but we can only help donkeys in most need by working in partnership with owners, communities, organisations and governments, building an understanding of donkeys and their importance to people that depend on them.

None of this lifesaving work would be possible without the incredible generosity of those who left us a gift in their will.  Legacies fund three quarters of our vital work, and the impact our far sighted and kind legators have on suffering donkeys worldwide simply cannot be overstated. As a token of our grateful thanks the names of our legators are inscribed forever on our memorial wall at our headquarters in Sidmouth, Devon.
