Registered Charity No: 1109196 (England & Wales).
The Dartmoor Pony Heritage Trust (DPHT), based at its purpose-built Centre at Parke, Bovey Tracey, Devon, is committed to ensuring the long-term future of the traditional, single colour Dartmoor Pony on Dartmoor. Numbers are now so low that we are in danger of losing one of Britain’s native ponies from the land of its origin.
If we lose the moorland-bred traditional ponies, we may lose their valuable bloodlines and special qualities such hardiness and vigour, but also manageable and gentle temperament. This combination makes them the perfect ‘conservation grazer’ and critical to the management and biodiversity of moorland, heathland and upland environments nationally as well as on Dartmoor itself.
One of our roles is to work with Dartmoor Pony Keepers who own the ponies, to retain the genetic strengths of the moorland-bred animals, assist with herd management methods, promote and market the ponies and handle (‘tame’) these semi-feral ponies so that they have a better value and a better start in domesticated life.
Dartmoor ponies are now in demand for conservation grazing roles across the UK and by placement of small herds of these Dartmoor-bred ponies, we are helping to ensure the availability of a ‘reservoir’ of genetically strong ponies for the future.
By giving in your Will or Legacy, you will help us to preserve the Dartmoor pony in its native habitat and to retain one of the UK’s most iconic native pony breeds.
