Registered Charity No: 1109196 (England & Wales).
The Dartmoor Pony Heritage Trust (DPHT) is committed to preserving the Dartmoor Pony on Dartmoor. Numbers are now so low that we are in danger of losing one of Britain’s most iconic native ponies from the land of its origin. If we lose the moorland-bred traditional ponies, we may lose their valuable bloodlines and special qualities.
By giving in your Will or Legacy, you will help us to preserve the Dartmoor pony in its native habitat.
One of our primary objectives is to retain the genetic strengths of the moorland-bred pony so that they can be available when markets improve. Another is to reduce the welfare concerns caused by ineffective or inappropriate herd management methods, including the culling of foundation brood mares and the annual excess of foals.
We work with pony breeders on the Moor to tackle the problems at source, such as developing and implementing methods to reduce excess foal production and improve quality, along with dealing with welfare issues. Our handling and taming methods enable us to turn feral ponies into potential conservation grazing, riding and companion animals quickly, gently and effectively.
The DPHT is located at its purpose-built Centre at Parke, Bovey Tracey, Devon, the base for our education programme, our volunteers who run the Charity and for our team of working ponies. It is where we carry out pony taming/handling, veterinary care and welfare work and is THE Dartmoor Pony Visitor and Information Centre for Dartmoor.
