Registered Charity No: 270941 (England & Wales).
‘Knowledge is power' is a well-known adage. It sums up the work of our charity, for the knowledge we help to acquire through research, and spread through teaching and publications, is a powerful way of preventing blindness. Scientific research has led to many breakthroughs in the diagnosis and treatment of the conditions that cause blindness, but there is still a great deal we do not understand. For example, the leading cause of blindness in the UK is age related macular degeneration, which accounts for almost 50% of those registered as blind or partially sighted. Yet the causes of the disease are not fully understood, and treatment options are limited. The British Council for Prevention of Blindness (BCPB) funds research into the causes of blindness and into new and better treatments. We also help to fund the training of medical professionals from the developing world who then return home to set up blindness prevention programmes in their own countries. As a result of our work, thousands of people around the world who would otherwise be blind can now see.
Everything we do depends on your support. In particular, we rely on the generosity of those who decide to leave a gift in their will to our charity.
Whether you have already made a will or are thinking of doing so, please consider making a charitable bequest to the BCPB. Your gift can help someone to see again, or perhaps for the first time.
